Moong Daal Usli is a healthy snack that is made at almost all the GSB homes, especially on Krishnashtami day. It is best eaten for breakfast but some like it with hot pooris as evening snack as well.
Makes a healthy breakfast or tea-time snack for 6 people.
Moong Daal Usli
Ingredients:
1. Split Moong(Green Gram ) Daal without skin - 200 Gms
2. Water - 1 Liter
3. Ginger - 1 Inch piece, finely chopped
4. Green Chillies - 1-2, chopped
5. Compounded Asafoetida(Hing) - A pinch, dissolved in 1Tbsp water(or 1/2 Tsp powder)
6. Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
6. Curry Leaves - A sprig
7. Dessicated or fresh Coconut - 2 handfuls or 1 Cup, grated
8. Refined Vegetable oil - 2 Tbsp
9. Sugar - 1 Tbsp
10. Salt - 1/2 Tsp or to taste
Method
Wash daal and soak in enough water for 15 mins.
Drain and keep aside.
Boil 1 liter water in a vessel.
Add the soaked and drained dal, cook for 10-15 mins or till just tender.
Drain and keep aside.
Heat oil in a kadai or wok.
Prepare a seasoning with mustard seeds till they crackle, add curry leaves and finally green chillies till they turn whitish.
Stir in the cooked daal, salt to taste, chopped ginger and sugar.
Add the asafoetida(Hing) solution or powder and grated coconut.
Toss well and serve.
